Kids take 3rd at EPC’s

Seth Lisa knew it and most of Northampton’s fans knew it.

The K-Kids 34-32 victory over Liberty in Saturday’s East Penn Conference Wrestling Championship Day third-place match may have been a gift.

If Liberty had a healthy Tal-Reese Flemming in the lineup at 113, they wouldn’t have had to forfeit at 106 and give up six crucial points in a dual meet, where the Kids let a 25-4 lead slip away into a 29-28 deficit with two bouts to go.

How that transpired was the ire of Lisa’s frustration leaving the mat at Easton Area Middle School.

“We had the match in control and then we completely gave away all the momentum and you can’t win matches like that,” said Lisa. “We got very fortunate to come out of here with a win. Bottom line is we can’t give up six points in bouts and expect to win.”

Northampton (11-2) led 25-4 after Michael Kistler capped off a run of five straight bonus point wins for the Kids with a 14-3 major decision over Josaiah Vasquez at 152. The match started at 120 with a major decision by Liberty’s Luke Werner, but then the Kids ran the table with their fleet of Julian Chlebove (126, major dec), KJ Fenstermacher (132, fall), Dan Moran (138, tech fall), Devon Britton (145, fall) and Kistler.

That spurt quickly turned into a run by the Hurricanes (8-2), as they won six of the next eight bouts led by falls from Anthony Emig (160), Damen Moyer (182) and Christian Gallagher (220).

Jaret Figueroa (HWT) then set off a firestorm when he topped Alex Darabaris 5-3 in overtime to push Liberty ahead 29-28.

However, that’s where the hype machine faded, as Liberty had to bump Matt Maloney up to 113, because of a hand injury to Tal-Reese Flemming, forcing them to forfeit at 106. Maloney won 13-6 over Ethan Szerencsits, but the forfeit ultimately cost Liberty the bout.

“A win’s a win and it wasn’t very good looking, but we definitely have areas to improve upon,” Lisa said. “Looks like we’ll wrestle them [Liberty] again and I think both coaches are going to have the same message to their teams.

“Don’t give up six points and we win.”

Northampton enters this week’s District Duals as the third-seed and will likely meet sixth-seeded Liberty in Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup at Memorial Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

Should that transpire, it’ll go down as the marquee bout of the tournament on opening night.

A victory would push the Kids to Saturday’s 10:45 a.m. semifinals at Freedom. Finals are slated for 5:30 p.m.
