Allen school could get new tenant
A veterinary hospital has been proposed at the site of a longtime, now-closed grade school in Allen Township, at which three township supervisors were students.
The former elementary school is located on Atlas Road and borders St. John’s United Church of Christ, Howertown.
Township Chairman Larry Oberly and Commissioners Bruce Frack and Dale Hassler said at the Jan. 24 presentation by Attorney Jim Holzinger, counsel for the unnamed client, the conversion of the two-story brick building to an animal hospital is feasible.
Holzinger said his meeting with the supervisors was more informational, to determine a next step - to seek a conditional use or other avenue or to take the matter directly to the supervisors or to the township zoning board.
Fees are involved in some of the options.
Last occupied by Hafner & Son Inc., the two-story structure has a for sale sign on the premises.
Holzinger said he does not see any changes needed to the building. It has undergone extensive remodeling since it was a school, sporting a white brickcote exterior, two large white columns at the entrance and narrow, modern windows.
The supervisors were told four patients would be at the veterinary hospital at any time. The 11 parking spaces now on site would be adequate, and there would be no boarding of animals. The structure is 3,200 square feet, more than adequate for the veterinary services.
The school building dates back to 1928. Hassler said he believes it operated until the early 1950s as a school for grades 1 through 8.
Holzinger said he will return to a supervisors meeting later this month.
