Moore Township supervisors hold reorganization meeting

During the Moore Township Board of Supervisors reorganization meeting Jan. 3, David Tashner Sr. returned as chairman, Daniel Piorkowski as vice chairman and Richard K. Gable as secretary/treasurer. All three gentleman held these positions during 2016.

Numerous positions were reappointed, including David Backenstoe as solicitor, Al Kortze of Keystone Consulting Engineers as engineer and Jason Harhart as zoning officer.

The meeting was swift because a number of committees and township organizations did not meet due to the December holiday season.

The police reported 351 incidents during December, including four arrests - two DUIs, one criminal mischief and one simple assault.

The recreation committee asked for approval of a request by Keystone Select Softball to hold a softball tournament in July. Tashner asked if the group presented a check for the rental fee. The recreation committee representative said no.

Tashner responded, “No check - no approval.”

The board agreed to table the request until the $100 fee is paid.

Another recreation committee request was to have an on-deck batting cage at all of the ball fields. This is for safety reasons to avoid anyone accidentally getting struck by a batter warming up on deck. The cost would be about $1,900.

Gable said, “Moore Township Athletic Association should pay some of the cost, not just the township.”

The request was tabled pending more information.

The land preservation committee representative voiced a concern about how the county is administering and spending matching funds for land preservation. The expressed concern is Moore Township being treated unfairly by Northampton County. The county’s distribution of land preservation monies from the state matching grant is in question.

Tashner asked the land preservation committee and board to hold a special meeting inviting a Northampton County representative to discuss the issues. A meeting was arranged.

The next board of supervisors meeting is planned for 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in the municipal building.
