Coplay, CFC approve lease

Susan Myers, who heads the Commitment to Family & Community (CFC) club, addressed Coplay Borough Council at its regular meeting Jan. 10.

As part of a lease agreement, council earlier had requested CFC have fire-suppression equipment in and around the grill inspected and approved. At the meeting, Myers verified the upgrade was scheduled for Jan. 11.

“Our goal is to be in full compliance with all the safety guidelines,” she said regarding the 165 Cherry St. building.

Myers presented council with a list of various organizations CFC has helped over the past year. CFC holds a Sunday breakfast on a regular basis to support its activities.

Council made approval of a fire-suppression system for the CFC hall, dependent on certification that the grill fire protection was inspected and working. Included in the new lease with CFC was a provision that the hood unit in the grill must be inspected and certified every year.

As part of its new year requirements, council appointed Councilman Stephen Burker to Coplay Borough Planning Commission, Richard Bundra to Coplay Borough Civil Service Commission and William Loy to Coplay Borough Park & Recreation Board.

In unfinished business, Councilman Charles Sodl reported he is still in negotiations with the contractor for the Coplay-Northampton Bridge. The contractor wants to use the borough’s newly acquired property on Bridge Street as a staging area once bridge construction begins.

Sodl also asked council to approve an expenditure for fire hydrant marking sticks.

“I think we had these at one time, but no one can find them,” he said. “When the hydrants get covered with snow, we can get them identified and get someone over there to dig them out.”

The sticks can be fitted atop the hydrants and are billed at $10 each. The borough has 63 hydrants.

Burker mentioned a special donation was contributed to the library. Martin Hacker, a realtor with ReMax in Whitehall, made the donation.

“Marty has always been a strong supporter of the library, and we want to acknowledge the contributions he has made to our library,” Burker said.
