Joseph F. Gilley III

Joseph F. Gilley III, of Macungie, died Dec. 30, 2016, at his home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Marlene (Kerath) Gilley for 55 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Doris (Powell) Gilley who died in 1957. Born in Fountain Hill, he was the son of Joseph F. Gilley, Jr. and Hilda M. (Sherman) Gilley.

After graduating from Fountain Hill High School, he served as an Army MP in World War II. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgical engineering and worked his entire career at Bethlehem Steel.

He served as president of the Lower Saucon PTA, the Saucon Valley School Board, was chairman of the board at Bethlehem Area Vo-Tech, coached Little League Baseball, served on church council and sang in the church choir. He volunteered at Musikfest and Bethlehem Rose Garden Children’s Festival, Sauconfest and he and his wife successfully mounted the Bethlehem 250th Anniversary Retail Store which contributed a $170,000 profit to the city.

He is survived by his wife; sons; Jeffrey and his wife Gayla, of Macungie, Jonathan and his wife Laurann, of Chicago, Ill. and Joel and his wife Molly, of Zionsville; daughter, Jennifer and her husband William Fleschner, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; grandchildren, Meghan, Christina, Jasper, Jaden, Micah Grace and Liam and Lance Joseph and Harley Fleschner; brother, Richard and his wife Rita, of Long Island, N.Y. He was predeceased by a sister, Lorriane Johnson.

A private service was held Jan. 2 at Hellertown Union Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. March 18 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5900 Old Bethlehem Pike, Center Valley, 18034. Arrangements were made by the Pearson Funeral Home, Inc., Bethlehem.
