NHS girls sit at 8-3, but look to improve

With Tuesday’s game against Whitehall canceled, the Northampton girls basketball team and head coach Jeff Jacksits had a chance to catch their breath a bit from what’s been a busy season thus far.

The girls are coming off a 61-34 win over Pocono Mountain West on Monday night. That win put them at 8-3 so far this season.

While that mark has them in pretty good shape heading down the stretch, Jacksits and the girls are striving to be better, especially when it matters most.

“The season is going well,” Jacksits said. “We lost a double OT game at State College and lost by one at Parkland. We could easily be 10-1. The girls are starting to learn to play together and realize their roles on the team.”

The Kids have been getting scoring from the usual suspects in Aja Blount, Victoria Keenan and Jenna Rogers. Jacksits said on any given night they get more contributions from Jade Rindock and Brielle Rigo. The offense has been successful with Keenan leading the fast break and being able to beat any kind of full court pressure.

Any team that wants to be successful also has to play defense and the Kids are getting that too, led by Devon Saul.

“They have all played good defense,” Jacksits said. “I always assign the best offensive player to [Saul].”

Jacksits added that Blount, Rogers and Rigo have done a good job on the boards.

However one area where Jacksits would like to see improvement is the half-court offense.

“I think for us to be successful we need to keep getting better at executing our half court offense,” Jacksits said. “This is one area that the coaches and I feel we need a lot more work. Most teams will try and slow us down so we need to be able to run an effective offense.”

With an improved half-court offense over the next several weeks, there’s no telling just how far the team can go.

“The coaches and I believe that, once we realize how good we can be and start working even harder at practice, we will be able to make a serious run in the league and district playoffs,” Jacksits said.

The postponed game with Whitehall will be made up on Wednesday, Jan. 18. The team will host Stroudsburg on Friday night, Jan. 13, and then host Central on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Jenna Rogers has been another key scorer for the Kids this season.
