With Whitehall Historical Preservation Society accomplishing its goal of preserving the Helfrich Springs Grist Mill, a project that began in 1984, the group has now set its sights on the restoration of the Peter Grim Homestead, across from the mill at the corner of Mickley and Lehnert roads.
The restoration project at the Peter Grim Homestead involves interior and exterior work and is now underway. The plans are to make certain the renovation reflects a 1840s-era residence.
The National Register of Historical Sites placed the homestead on its register listing in 1999. The structure houses the preservation society’s office and a genealogical research library.
Filled with artifacts and warmed by a pot belly furnace, the Peter Grim Homestead is much more than a museum; the two-story stone structure also is a gathering place for the society, whose guest speakers address a range of local themes.
The Helfrich Springs Grist Mill was placed on the National Register of Historical Sites in 1977.
Restoration of the grist mill building was accomplished through financial assistance from The Century Fund, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Lehigh County Board of Commissioners, Society for the Preservation of Old Mills, Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners, Whitehall Township Recreation Commission, fundraisers and public donations.
