Evelyn Horan Bannon

Evelyn Horan Bannon, 98, of Emmaus, formerly of Carbondale, died peacefully Dec. 9, 2016, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Allentown. She was the wife of the late Francis G. Bannon, who died June 10, 2010. Born in Carbondale, she was a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Scanlon Horan.

She was a lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, where she was a daily communicant. For the past 11 years she was a faithful member of St. Thomas More Church, Allentown.

She was the valedictorian of the Class of 1936 at St. Rose Academy. In 1940 she graduated from Marywood College with a bachelor of science degree in business. Prior to her marriage, she was employed at IBM in Binghamton and Murray’s Corporation, Scranton. After raising her daughters, she returned to Marywood earning her teaching certificate. For several years she was a third grade teacher at St. Rose Elementary School. Following her teaching career, she served St. Rose Church as the rectory office manager for 15 years.

She is survived by daughters Mary and her husband Robert Walter, of Columbia, Md., Elizabeth Ann, of Mishawaka, Ind., Eileen, of Hershey, Kathleen and her husband Richard McKernan, of Mishawaka, Ind. and Annie and her husband Mark Kuna, of Allentown; grandchildren, Noreen McKernan, of Chicago, Ill., Andrew Walter, of Savage, Md., Emily McKernan, of Chicago, Ill., Brian McKernan, of Mishawaka, Ind., Matthew Kuna, of Wynnewood, Ryan Kuna, of Philadelphia, and Scott Kuna, of Allentown; sister, Rita Horan, of Carbondale; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by brothers, Rev. Monsignor Thomas C. Horan, Rev. Walter H. Horan, O.P., and Rev. Monsignor Kenneth T. Horan; sisters, Elizabeth Horan and Mary Martin; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, 18509 or to St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave., Scranton, 18503.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14 from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace St., Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale.
