More and more, the once pastoral landscape of Allen Township is changing to one of large structures like warehouses and 18-wheel diesel trucks carrying cargo there.
While the impact has not yet been fully felt, since FedEx Ground has just begun construction of its huge distribution complex off Willowbrook Road, more such projects seem to be appearing on the horizon.
At the board of supervisors meeting Nov. 22, Rockefeller Group presented a sketch plan showing proposed warehouses - one to be built on the west side of Willowbrook Road and the other planned for the northeast corner at Radar Lane, east of Willowbrook Road and in proximity to the FedEx Ground project.
The 80 acres of land would be swallowed up by a warehouse of more than 1 million square feet in size and another taking up 344,000 square feet.
Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority is the land owner but has been conferring with Rockefeller Group on the proposed land sale, supervisors learned.
No further details were shared on possible tenants for the two tracts.
The township planning commission, at press time, had not received the formal plans. However, the larger warehouse could have 190 loading docks, 354 trailer parking slots and 469 parking spaces for vehicles.
The smaller warehouse would house 59 loading docks, 74 trailer parking slots and 170 spots for vehicles.
Township supervisors were told there would be 15,000 to 16,000 projected trips per day, a number already counted in with the earlier-approved FedEx Ground project.
