LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay Creek has water flowing again

Coplay Creek, its bed dry for months due to two sinkholes at a Hokendauqua field, now has water cascading over rocks as it meanders east, near Darktown, and spilling into the Lehigh River.

Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said the water at the site of the two sinkholes had overflowed; most likely, the recent heavy rainfalls had something to do with the rise in the water table.

“For how long?” Hozza asked though.

With the rush of water making a pleasant sound, he said there is no answer regarding the duration of the water in the creek.

There has been no word on whether the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, which had been notified earlier, is addressing the problem. There also was a remediation plan discussed of having the void or cavity filled with specialized concrete, called flowable fill, and a waterproof membrane placed over the area. Officials also talked of relocating the creek temporarily while the work took place.

The sinkholes are not located on township property, but rather on Tate Farm - Whitehall Tamco LLC properties - which is located behind the township’s public works building.

Coplay Creek normally has a flow of 6 to 22 inches. Spring fed, it meanders from North Whitehall Township, across the Iron Lakes Golf Course property and then through a slice of Whitehall Township.

On occasion, Lafarge Cement Company releases water from its quarries, the same for Essroc Cement Company, Hozza said earlier.
