Norfolk-Southern Railroad will make repairs to the railroad crossing at 21st Street (Route 329) in Northampton the weekend of Dec. 9, thus requiring the closing of the Cementon-Northampton Bridge to all vehicle traffic.
The bridge will be closed 6 p.m.-6 a.m. Dec. 9-11.
Work on the railroad crossing involves the roadbed.
The detour will direct traffic to the Coplay-Northampton Bridge, where traffic will proceed one block on Chestnut Street and be directed to turn onto North Second Street, proceeding to North Coplay in Whitehall Township and then en route to Route 145.
There is a 17-ton weight limit on the Coplay-Northampton Bridge, which is slated for demolition next year and construction of a new bridge.
Whitehall Township has been notified of Norfolk-Southern’s plans to close the bridge during that time.
Northampton Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said the bridge repairs underway on Main Street, near Lerchenmiller Drive, were set to be completed by Nov. 23. At press time, the repairs were not finished, and the short span had not been opened to vehicle traffic.
