Coplay woman celebrates 100th birthday

Life is filled with remembrances of births, marriage and anniversaries - and birthdays, especially if you’ve had 100 of them.

Anna Wechsler, of Coplay, celebrated such a feat Nov. 19. Her family and the community joined together in heralding Wechsler, who was surprised by all the attention shown her on this occasion.

Coplay Borough Mayor Dean Molitoris proclaimed Nov. 19 as Mrs. Anna Wechsler Day in Coplay.

Wechsler and her family started the day at a Mass at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, a couple of blocks from her North Third Street residence.

A dinner in her honor was then held at Paulie’s Family Restaurant, Coplay.

A few days before, on Nov. 16, Coplay Senior Citizens Club, of which Wechsler is a longtime member, hosted a program akin to the once-popular television program “This is Your Life.”

In royal fashion, Coplay Seniors Citizens Club President Dale Simon placed a tiara on Wechsler’s head, noting it was a proud moment for the club, which had a large turnout of members and well-wishers.

Councilman Charlie Sodl, reading the mayor’s proclamation, spoke of Wechsler mother’s residence on Cherry Street and a brief family move to Quakertown before returning to the borough.

In congratulating Wechsler on the special occasion, Mgsr. John Martin, pastor at St. Peter church, noted Wechsler became a volunteer at the church when it was founded. She was 10 years old. She volunteered all through the years.

Before her marriage, she was a member of the church’s Sodality, a group for single girls.

On her marriage, she joined the church’s Altar and Rosary Society.

Wechsler sang with Coplay Saengerbund’s Kindrchor and worked in apparel factories for years.

She played piano and loved singing.

Today, Wechsler enjoys puzzles, game shows on TV and rice wurst, her favorite food.

Married to Frank Wechsler, the couple had six children, four boys and two girls. Mr. Wechsler died in 1980.

Along with a citation from state Rep. Dan McNeill, D-133rd, and a proclamation from Molitoris, Simon presented Wechsler with a framed plaque, its centerpiece a $100 bill noting her 100th birthday.

Active years back as one of the first pierogi makers at St. Peter, Simon also presented the honoree with a bag of pierogies.

Wechsler said family is what makes her happy. In addition to her six children, she has 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

With a twinkle in her eye and a broad smile, Wechsler said she was surprised she was recognized by Coplay Senior Citizens Club.

“It was great,” she said.
