Kids ready for Catasauqua

The 94th meeting between Northampton and Catasauqua takes place Thursday morning with both teams looking to cap off difficult 2016 seasons in grand fashion.

The Kids (1-10) have won the last two meetings in this series and hold an all-time lead of 56-33-4.

However, the MVP of the last two contests had been Devon Turner, who turned in a five touchdown performance in last year’s 40-26 victory, is now gone to graduation, as someone else in the black and orange will need to step up if they want to push their streak to three straight wins in this series.

For Catty (2-8), it’s an opportunity to get some payback when they kickoff at 10 a.m. at Alumni Field.

“It’s a huge rivalry and everyone is excited,” said Northampton head coach Mark Scisly. “It’s definitely a long stretch of not playing in a couple weeks, but our guys have been good about it. Our practices have been very good the last two weeks.”

As in most cases of this matchup, Northampton holds a size advantage up front and will look to utilize that again with their rushing attack, as Turner was able to crank out 227 yards in last year’s contest.

Catty will conversely look to their aerial attack behind the arm of quarterback Andrew Brett, whose thrown for 1,835 yards and 14 touchdowns this year.

Miguel Hernandez (52 catches, 723 yards and six touchdowns) and Ryan Greene (54 catches, 544 yards and five touchdowns) have both been the beneficiaries of Brett’s success under center and will pose problems for Northampton this week.

“Catty is very good at the skill positions,” said Scisly. “Our secondary will need to play well in order for us to win the game. We have the size advantage up front.”

Quarterback Colin Shucker will be the primary focus of the offense this week, as he leads the team with 12 touchdowns (six passing, six rushing) on the season.

Jared Stauffer could be a key for the Kids at running back, should they look to get their offense going on the ground, as he’s only run for 513 yards and four touchdowns.

Northampton is coming off their first win of the season in week 11 following a 21-0 victory over Upper Merion and will look to carry that confidence into a road tilt this week.

“We need to limit or eliminate big plays for Catty,” said Scisly of this week’s keys. “If we can pressure the quarterback and win the battle at the line of scrimmage and play well on special teams, we’ll be in good position.”
