Borough will hold Nov. 27 tree-lighting ceremony

The Borough of Northampton is putting the finishing touches on preparations for its annual yule tree-lighting ceremony, set for this coming Sunday, Nov. 27, beginning 5:30 p.m. at Main Street and Laubach Avenue.

Borough council, at its Nov. 17 meeting, stated the fire department’s aerial fire truck will escort Santa and Mrs. Claus 6 p.m. to the celebration.

“A choir of students from Good Shepherd Catholic School will entertain those gathered with a concert of Christmas carols,” borough Manager Leroy Brobst told council.

As children announce the countdown, JoAnn Cenchitz, who donated the tree, has the honor of pushing the button to illuminate the tree with hundreds of lights.

Each child will be greeted by Santa and given a bag of goodies.

The event draws a large crowd, and Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. said the faces of children, filled with excitement, is priceless.

Borough public works personnel have completed placing the lighted holiday decorations on Main Street light poles.

Also at the meeting, Councilman Anthony Pristash, building, land and recreation committee chairman, reported the recreation center’s sponsored bus trip to Sight & Sound Dec. 9 in Lancaster has been filled. Guests will attend a buffet at Shady Maple and enjoy a production of “Samson.”
