Duggan back for PSO concert

Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Allan Birney, presents “Enchantment Times Three,” 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19, First Presbyterian Church Allentown, Cedar Crest Boulevard and Tilghman Street, Allentown.

The theme of threes is carried out in three dramatic pieces of music and a trio of guest musicians. The local vocal group Camerata Singers, directed by Birney, also performs.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Concerto in C for piano, violin, cello and orchestra, Op. 56, “Triple Concerto,” features guest soloists, pianist Farther Sean Duggan, violinist David Colwell and cellist Natasha Farny.

“Lux Aeterna” (“Light Eternal”) by Morten Lauridsen will performed by the Camerata Singers and Sinfonia.

The concert opens with “Fingal’s Cave (Hebrides Overture),” Op. 26 by Felix Mendelssohn.

Duggan has been making regular visits to the Lehigh Valley to perform since 2000, sometimes with the Sinfonia orchestra and sometimes in solo recital.

Duggan is associate professor of piano at the State University of New York, Fredonia, N.Y., and has been a guest artist and adjudicator at Chautauqua for several summers.

Two of Duggan’s Fredonia School of Music colleagues at Fredonia join him in Allentown.

Colwell, a native of Alberta, Canada, made his debut with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at age 14. He received Master of Music, Master of Musical Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Yale University.

Farny studied at the Curtis Institute of music, Yale College, and received Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School. At age 17 and 18, she won three Boston-based concerto competitions with the Shostakovich Concerto No. 1 and the Dvorak Concerto, resulting in performances with the Boston Symphony and the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony Orchestra.
