Whitehall Township Acting Police Chief Michael Marks will become the township’s police chief at the Nov. 14 board of commissioners meeting, at which Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. will officially make the appointment and a vote of the seven commissioners will confirm the decision.
Marks has been serving the township as acting chief, upon Hozza’s appointment, when former Police Chief Linda Kulp announced her retirement in March.
An oath of office ceremony also will take place, at which time Marks will be pinned with his new chief of police badge.
Kulp, a lieutenant on the police force, headed the police investigation bureau, known formerly as the detective bureau. The police department does not have an assistant police chief but has three slots for lieutenant, positions under the rank of chief.
Hozza said on Friday there were no other candidates he had in mind for the position. No one else was interviewed nor was a search conducted for the position. Marks was the only one considered, Hozza said.
At the budget hearings that just recently concluded, Marks received high praise from commissioners for his leadership in running the department and the initiatives under his helm. Marks said while the department’s roster has excellent officers, there are always ways to make the department better in serving the community.
The 2017 budget, which will be adopted by commissioners, has a $112,112 salary for Marks, up from the present $100,709 salary this year.
