Historical society
The men who comprised the 151st and their actions during the Gettysburg Campaign will be the focus of an upcoming lecture sponsored by the Longswamp Township Historical Society 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Henry Auditorium at the Lutheran Home at Topton, 1 So. Home Ave., Topton.
The presenter will be Roy Gehris, currently adjutant, webmaster and Honor Guard member of American Legion, Ray A. Master, Post 217, Inc.
He served for five years in the United States Marine Corps as an aviation metalsmith in the Marine Fighter/Attack Squadron 531 (VMFA-531) and also as a Marine Corps MP.
He is a Vietnam veteran.
Today, he classifies himself a retired genealogist focused on his family’s history, including its military past.
His great granduncle was a member of the 151st.
At Gehris’ request, the Longswamp Township Historical Society will donate his speaking fee to the Gettysburg National Military Park for preservation/maintenance of the monument erected to honor the actions and sacrifices of the men of the 151st.
The mission of the Longswamp Township Historical Society is to ensure present and future generations will be able to learn and study the historical heritage of the township.
Company K of the 151st regiment was formed in Longswamp Township and comprised of a number of men who lived in the township.
The presentation will be accompanied by a PowerPoint slide show.
The event is free to the public.
