Borough to begin budget work

At Coplay Borough Council’s workshop session Tuesday night, Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer announced the date for budget approval as Dec. 19. A special meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. that evening.

The first look at the budget is scheduled for council’s regular meeting Nov. 8.

“It has been a long process putting this together. And we have a good approach,” Eisenhauer said.

As part of the budget approval process, council will appoint auditors for three years, beginning with an audit of the 2016 books. Kirk, Summa & Co. was selected. The firm’s appointment is on the schedule for the next regular meeting.

Mayor Dean Molitoris reported on feedback he received from residents who got letters about grass clippings left in the street.

“Most of the people were upset that they got the letters,” Molitoris said. “They said contractors are doing their grass, and they come back and clean up the clippings.”

According to Councilman Charles Sodl, contractors often ignore the rule and move on to the next job.

“We established the rule to keep clippings out of the sewer system. It is good to see that residents are becoming more aware of the problem,” he said.

Police officers on patrol can issue tickets.

Council is looking at options to sell property it owns at 38 S. Fourth St. Councilman David Royer reported his committee is leaning toward using an auctioneer. He will investigate costs. The purchaser pays an auctioneer fee, normally 10 percent. Advertising expenses and other costs are the borough’s responsibility.

The borough is awaiting word on grant funds that can be used for improvements at Saylor Park and for improvements to the Bridge Street property. Council President Louis Bodish said he expects the borough will hear something prior to the next regular meeting.

At its regular meeting, council expects to announce a dedication date for the borough’s Community Plaza on the corner of Chestnut and Second streets.

The library is sponsoring a fundraising event Dec. 1 at Blue Monkey Sports Restaurant, North Catasauqua. The library will receive a percentage of sales made between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
