Coplay has candidates for open zoning hearing board seats
Last month, Coplay Borough Council put out an urgent plea for candidates to fill open positions on the zoning hearing board. At council’s workshop session Oct. 4, borough Secretary Sandra Gyecsek announced that Melvin Procanyn submitted an application.
“It has been a long while since we had a zoning hearing board meeting. We found out that the attorney for the board retired.
“Retired attorney Jeffrey Matzkin recommended council consider William Fries for the position,” Gyecsek said.
Procanyn and Fries will be vetted and voted on at the next regular meeting.
Police Chief Vincent Genovese asked council to grant a request from Hobby Shop for an additional parking space.
“The space would be reserved for customers during business hours for a half-hour,” he said.
The business has limited parking options. There are parking restrictions on Second Street. The business already has one parking spot reserved. Council approved the additional space.
Councilman Mark Molitoris questioned Genovese about being consistent.
“We had a request from Milander’s for a space and we denied it,” he said.
Genovese explained that Milander’s already had two reserved spaces and wanted two spaces on the other side of the street.
“We don’t have a problem extending parking, but we don’t like to restrict parking on the opposite side of the street,” Genovese said.
Councilman Charles Sodl announced that the borough fire department is having an open house 6-9 p.m. Oct. 10.
Councilman Stephen Burker announced that the borough will look at using the proceeds from the profitable Community Days celebration to fund additional security cameras. Burker also announced that the borough will hold a fundraiser Dec. 9 with proceeds going to the Community Plaza at Second and Chestnut Streets.
The borough’s regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 11.
