Main St. bridge to close Monday

The bridge in the 1000 block of Main Street, between Laubach Avenue and Lerchenmiller Drive, will be closed beginning Oct. 3 as Northampton County makes extensive repairs to the area.

Some motorists, including even longtime borough residents, may be unaware of the small bridge that crosses the Hokendauqua Creek, which flows into the nearby Lehigh River.

The area will be closed to all traffic - vehicular and pedestrian - until Nov. 30, according to a report from Northampton Borough Police Department.

Borough Manager Leroy Brobst expressed his displeasure with the county, which he said provided few details on the bridge work, including the scope and length of the project.

Brobst said motorists should follow detour signs.

“Southbound traffic on Main Street will be detoured onto Smith Lane by Municipal Park, then onto Lerchenmiller Drive,” he said.

“At Washington Avenue, by the recreation center, traffic will proceed to East 10th Street, whereby making a right turn. Main Street is one block away.

“Northbound traffic will follow the detour in reverse.

“Traffic can also travel in both directions around the bridge area by using West 10th Street to Canal Street and back to Main Street, using Laubach Avenue,” Brobst continued.

The route for Northampton’s Jack Frost Parade, to be held Oct. 20, will be affected by the closing.
