Golf completes good season; future bright

The Northampton golf team recently concluded its regular season and on Tuesday morning took part in the East Penn Conference golf tournament at Woodstone, outside of Bath.

The Kids finished an impressive 14-4 season, and for head coach Brian Davies, accomplished some goals as well.

“We finished 14-4 which is achieving the goal I wanted to reach at the beginning of the year,” Davies said. “This year was all about patience and developing our players. Going into EPC’s, we have several players who are playing golf at their best.”

This year’s playoffs will provide members of the team with some very good experience. Davies mentioned kids like Andrew Hozza, Jack Test, Anthony Sawarynski, Andrew Kovalchik and Devon Britton as some of the standouts from this year’s team. Only Test is a junior while the others are sophomores. Obviously, the future is bright.

“Overall, I am excited for the future of the team, as we have all members returning next year,” Davies said. “Fortunately for our school, many other strong programs in the Lehigh Valley are graduating key contributors.

“The future for Northampton golf is trending upward and our goal next year is to win the school’s second district championship and first EPC league title.”

Test had a low round of 73 this season and averaged 81.

“Jack had a few rough matches at the start of the year, but has been slowly improving his average throughout the last four matches,” Davies said.

Hozza, a sophomore, had a low round of 74 and averaged 80 for the year. Davies says he’s poised to make big leaps for the team next year.

Sawarynski, also a sophomore, had a low round of 78 this year and averaged 84. Davies said he can hit the ball a long way and is making strides in the short game.

Britton had a low round of 78 as well this season and is another sophomore. He averaged 89 and Davies feels he just needs to get more rounds under his belt to drop his average.

Kovalchik is another sophomore who has a low round of 81 this season with an average of 85. Davies said he’s been working on consistency striking the golf ball.
