Girls fall to PHS in tennis

By the time Northampton’s girls’ tennis team hosted Parkland, the two teams were tied for fourth place in the East Penn Conference, but Parkland ultimately stepped away with a 5-2 victory on Sept. 22.

The match was highlighted by two tiebreaks and two three-set matches, one of which was won by Northampton.

In singles play, Parkland’s Patricia Yao won 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 over Emma Angle at number one.

At number two, Mary Angle defeated Madison Staiman 6-0, 6-2.

“I did. I did [have a hard time]. It was harder than it looked. It didn’t show,” Emma Angle said. “I was playing a lefty, so I kept giving it to her backhands, and my serves were good today.”

At number three, Parkland’s Anna Li defeated Grace Lewis 6-0, 6-1.

Northampton coach Kim Davis called up Lizzie Moore and Shannon Reinhard from junior varsity to play at number one doubles. Although they lost 7-7 (3-7), Coach Davis said they were well-deserving of the nod.

“This is their first time at varsity doubles,” Davis said. “They’ve worked hard, and they deserve it.”

At number two doubles, Rachel Lange and Caleigh Savage lost 1-6, 2-6, but Cece Lebus and Liz Hozza won a hard-fought match at three doubles 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

At number four doubles, Sydney Schmall and Lauren Haggerty lost 6-7 (1-7), 2-6.

Nothing could take away Northampton’s 10 wins so far this season, however.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had 10 wins before,” said Davis. “We have experienced players. They’ve been around for three years, and we have kids that really want to play. Some don’t know how to win yet, but they really want to play.”
