Planning commission OKs social club proposal

Northampton Borough Planning Commission at its Sept. 14 meeting approved the proposal of Pennsylvania Venture Capital Inc., Whitehall, to establish a religious-based social club at 1464 Washington Ave., formerly the home of Catholic War Veterans Post 454.

The planning commission’s recommendation now goes to borough council, which will vote on the final approval regarding the plan. The borough zoning hearing board at a July 14 hearing gave its consent to the Whitehall-based company, headed by Abe Atiyeh, to move forward with plans for the club.

Last Wednesday’s meeting by the planning commission was the second held for the Pennsylvania Venture Capital proposal. The board met Aug. 10, deferring a decision until it received a report from the zoning board.

A resident whose home is across the street from the proposed club was the sole objector on the basis that there is no off-street parking and one slot for handicapped parking at the rear of the structure.

Mickey Thompson, representing Pennsylvania Venture Capital, said, “We want to be a good neighbor.”

He said there will not be alcoholic beverages allowed on the premises nor will they seek an alcohol license from the state. There will not be any cooking in the kitchen as a stipulation for approval.

Along with religious-based activities, there may be birthday parties or small functions, the planning commission was told.

On noting a request for a midnight closing at events, planning commission member Robert McHale said when religious social events are held, for the most part, they end 10 p.m.

Following conclusion of taking testimony, McHale requested the commission deliberate in executive session but was informed the talks must be held publicly.
