NHS faces challenging week
The Northampton tennis team currently sits at 10-2 on the season as they begin their final stretch of the regular season leading up to the postseason.
The girls are ranked fifth in the EPC and District 11 rankings. Before the postseason arrives, the Kids have some business to take care of first.
“We are facing a real tough stretch this week,” head coach Kim Davis said.
Northampton will face Central, Parkland and Nazareth before closing out the season with Wilson.
Recently, the team knocked off Whitehall 6-1.
Emma and Mary Angle continued their dominating play at one and two singles for the Kids and each only has one loss on the year, according to Davis.
“Emma and Mary are playing very well,” Davis said.
Against, the Zephs, both were 6-0, 6-0 winners with Emma knocking off Emily Yenser and Mary beating Nicole Peluso. Grace Lewis won her match over Emma Garno 6-4, 7-5.
The girls are also getting great play from their doubles teams.
Liz Hozza and CeCe LeBus won 6-2, 6-0 at number three and at number four Lauren Haggerty and Sydney Schmall won 6-4, 7-5.
Before defeating Tamaqua last week, the girls defeated Emmaus, which always seems to be in the mix for league and district titles. Emma Angle needed three sets at number one before winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 over Elise VanOrmer. Mary Angle was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Tina Zhang.
Hozza and LeBus at number three doubles and Haggerty and Schmall at number-four doubles once again won their matches as well.
“We’re getting good doubles plays from CeCe LeBus and Liz Hozza and Lauren Haggerty and Sydney Schmall are doing well at number-four doubles,” Davis said.
