MunOpCo opens 89th season with ‘The Producers’
MunOpCo Music Theatre kicks off its 89th season with “The Producers,” a hit Broadway musical that won a record 12 Tony Awards, with performances at 8 p.m. Sept. 17 and 24 and 2 p.m. Sept. 18 and 25, Scottish Rite Cathedral, 1533 Hamilton St., Allentown.
“The Producers,” adapted from the classic Mel Brooks’ film of the same name, is a musical satire about Max Bialystock and Leopold Bloom, two get-rich-quick theater producers who discover a surefire way to make a fortune on Broadway: raise millions from investors, produce the worst play in a long history of flops, and run off with the money when the play closes on opening night. Instead, the show unexpectedly becomes a hit and hilarity ensues.
“The Producers” is written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Brooks, and original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman.
The MunOpCo production of “The Producers” is directed by Rody Gilkeson. Choreography is by Joey Shubert. Music direction is by Elizabeth Marsh-Gilkeson.
“The cast has accepted every challenge that the show demands,” said Gilkeson. “Having been the Tony Award leader of all time for its run on Broadway, we are striving to make MunOpCo’s version as close to the original production as possible. I believe our audiences will have a truly hysterical experience that will whet their appetite to see more MunOpCo productions.”
Max Bialystock and Leopold Bloom are played by Bill Mutimer and Seth Rohrbach, respectively. Elizabeth Marsh-Gilkeson plays the producers’ assistant, Ulla.
Chip Rohrbach portrays playwright, Franz Liebkind. Matt Walczer is Roger De Bris, “Springtime for Hitler”’s director. Ian Gilkeson plays Carmen Ghia, assistant to Roger De Bris. Rob Clausnitzer plays the Nazi tenor Stormtrooper. Mary Catherine Bracali portrays Hold Me, Touch Me.
