Field hockey 2-2-1

Northampton’s field hockey team is in a year of transition and it apparently hasn’t lost a step.

The Konkrete Kids lost a number of seniors from last year’s squad and new head coach and alum Carrie Saul has made a smooth adjustment. Through their first five games, the Kids had a 2-2-1 record and were in the pack for the East Penn Conference race.

“Right now, we have been making a push and really working together,” said Saul, who spent the previous four years at the helm of the Catasauqua program. “We have been working on our shots and moving the ball well.

“We have been making improvements with each game. Parkland was a good test for us and it was a challenger. We got the equalizer with four-and-a-half-minutes left and we had some opportunities after that.”

Saul has looked to the senior class to be catalysts for the team. Emily Henry and Hallie Muffley have paced the offense. After the Parkland game, Henry had six goals and six assists and Muffley had four goals and two assists.

Junior Brynne Ehrlacher has been a mainstay on defense.

“Henry and Muffley have been very consistent for us so far,” said Saul. “We will look to them to be our leading scorers this season. (Ehrlacher) has been a stalwart for us on defense and she is a very patient player.”

Like several clubs, the Kids have been battling through a series of injuries and illnesses. Saul noted that five starters recently were out of the lineup.

“We have a number of players who are getting playing time and establishing themselves,” she said. “It is a real test for all of us with players out of the lineup. But it really provides some motivation for some of them.”

The Kids also have been thrust in the heart of their schedule as they had four games scheduled this week. It will be a test of mettle and character.

“We know we have a tough game every night,” she added. “But these girls have the ability and potential to battle through this. We just have to keep on working.”
