Sprucing up Siegfried Station
The Siegfried Railroad Station, located on West 21st Street in Northampton, is currently undergoing a renovation project.
The station, known as the headquarters of the Northampton Area Historical Society, was built in 1876. It was not leased by Northampton Borough until an entire century later - in 1976 - so a lot of upkeep has been necessary over the years.
According to Irene Urban, vice president of the historical society, “Renovation is needed to keep the building standing.”
Some work that has already taken place includes restoration to the original windows and doors.
“Most of the renovations that took place were strictly cosmetic until the kind donations from the Northampton County Hotel Tax allowed us to do much more,” Urban said.
For example, the newfound funding allowed for a new wooden floor to replace the original cement flooring. Other renovations include new roofing and outdoor siding.
Although more renovations are needed, the station has come a long way over the years.
The station is open 1-4 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month from May through October.
When people come to tour the station, they can expect to see displays from old businesses that were once in town and that are currently in town, memorabilia from local pharmacies and drug stores, a display on the Atlas Cement Company, displays on different breweries and dairies, as well as civil war items, a railroad lab display, other miscellaneous displays and more.
Each year, the historical society creates a feature display. This year, the display is on railroad lanterns. Next year, the feature display will be on the first ward in Northampton.
Unique souvenirs are always available for purchase at the station.
The historical society will be hosting a garage sale 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 10, in conjunction with the borough’s Street Fair.
“Anyone is welcomed to come visit during that time to learn about the history of the Siegfried Station and to see rooms of unique artifacts,” Urban said.
