A faith-based social club proposed at the site of the former Catholic War Veterans (CWV) Post 454 has Northampton Borough Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. adamantly opposed to having it approved at the Washington Avenue and 15th Street site.
PA Venture Capital, of Whitehall Township, would like to convert the former CWV building into a social club with religious overtones.
Lopsonzski Sr. said there is a serious parking problem in that area, which would be compounded if the proposed use was permitted.
The borough planning commission will meet Sept. 14 to review PA Venture Capital’s plans. The hearing is a continuation from a meeting held Aug. 10 when the proposed project was aired.
Abe Atiyeh is CEO of PA Venture Capital.
Testimony at the earlier meeting disclosed there is only one handicap parking slot at the rear of the building; no other parking spaces are present. A resident living nearby voiced concerns about a potential parking issue.
Also at the meeting, Lopsonzski Sr. expressed his frustration over two stalled residential projects, one at Main and 18th streets and the other on 21st Street.
Lopsonzski Sr. said he wants the New Jersey developer to adhere to his agreement with the borough to provide timely progress reports on the former Tama building, 18th and Main streets, which received approval for conversion to apartments.
The other, the long-idled lot behind CVS Pharmacy, Route 329, which had condos/apartments approved several years ago, has weeds that prevent sight access for traffic from Cement Haul Road. Lopsonzski Sr. said he wants an update on what is or is not taking place there.
