U.S. Army

U.S. Army National Guard Pvt. Dustin Durgin has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, as well as military courtesy, drill and ceremony, and the military justice system. He also completed rigorous physical fitness training and foot marches and underwent instruction and practice in rifle marksmanship, bayonet use, unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, basic first aid and chemical warfare.

Durgin is a 2010 graduate of Catasauqua High School.

He is the son of Stephen Durgin, of Catasauqua.

U.S. Air Force

U.S. Air Force Airman Joseph Szerencsits IV graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Szerencsits is a 2014 graduate of Northampton Area High School.

He is the son of Joseph and Cathrine Szerencsits, of Northampton; grandson of Joseph and Diane Szerencsits, of Northampton; grandson of Sandra Horvath, of Northampton; and nephew of Patty Horvath, of Whitehall.

U.S. ARMY

Amanda T. Kesselring, of Coplay, was sworn into the U.S. Army July 19 at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Mechanicsburg. She is currently undergoing nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, where she has been assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment. At Fort Jackson, Kesselring and her fellow infantrymen and women will encounter daily physical, mental and emotional challenges of will, strength and endurance designed to progress them through the first phase of selfless service.

Upon graduation from basic combat training, Kesselring will be stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where she will begin advanced individual training in her chosen field as a health care specialist.

Prior to enlisting in the Army, Kesselring completed two years of studies at Bloomsburg University, majoring in psychology and minoring in gerontology and Spanish. She was an active member of the Bison Battalion ROTC, a community assistant at Schuylkill Hall, a contributing writer for the Campus Bloom newspaper and president of Developing Ambitious Student Leaders (DASL).

She logged many hours doing volunteer and charitable work with the Geisinger Blood Drive, Denville State Hospital, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, Camp Victory, Bloomsburg’s Springfest, Husky Student Leadership Summit, Easter egg hunt for Endometriosis, Denville ASPCA, The Big Event, Guest Field services, HOPE and DASL.
