Council considers replacing fountain at Uptown Park

A fountain at the Borough of Northampton’s Uptown Park is literally “for the birds,” so borough council is considering having a larger fountain take its place, giving the mini-park a more pleasing appearance.

Borough Manager Leroy Brobst, at the council meeting last month, addressed the Uptown Park matter, first noting Northampton County has given the borough until Aug. 31 to complete the Uptown Park project.

A deadline is in place because grant funding was utilized to construct the park on Main Street, just south of the Roxy Theatre.

“A landscaper has been chosen, and the only question remaining to use all of the funding would require council to consent to move the current water fountain to the back of the property where the landscaper will incorporate it to present an aesthetic appearance and permanently install a larger fountain in the same location of the current fountain,” Brobst said.

Continuing, the borough manager said, “The smaller fountain has developed issues with the water drying up far too quickly. The water that is still left in the basin has formed algae and would better serve as a bird bath near the back corner of the property.”

Although Uptown Park has been open for several months, council has not said if it will have a formal program dedicating the mini-park to its network of recreation and leisure facilities.

The borough-sponsored farmers market operates Tuesday afternoons at Uptown Park but is expected to have a new locale in 2017.

Kroope’s Cotton Goods was at the site decades ago, but for more than 20 years, it has been vacant. A fire destroyed the structure during that time, and in recent years, the borough acquired the lot from Brian Kroope.
