Moore Twp. supervisors discuss Community Days, movie night

During the August meeting of the Moore Township Board of Supervisors, two events were discussed: a two-day Community Days event and a Movie Night under the Stars.

Supervisor Richard Gable announced that organizers are gearing up for their first Community Days. Moore Township Community Days, Aug. 26 and 27, will be held at the recreation center. Hours are 3-10 p.m. Friday and noon-10 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature food, fun and fireworks. Entertainment includes Point 08, Uncle Smiley and Crazy Heart.

Gable also endorsed, and the board approved, Movie Night under the Stars, set for Aug. 19. The featured movie is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” There is no cost to attend the event, set for the recreation center’s Borek Field. The food stand will open 7 p.m. All food is $1 each.

Charmaine Bartholomew, Moore Township Historical Commission chairperson, told the supervisors the commission is planning a fundraiser at Community Days. She is planning a calendar sale and is hoping to get a historical book about Moore Township printed in time for the event.

Bartholomew also is planning a German Fest at Southmoore Golf Course. It is tentatively planned for Oct. 6.

She will be selling hex signs with the Moore Township logo in the center as a fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit Edelman School, a one-room schoolhouse the historical society is working to renovate.

The township recreation department requested $400 for bases at the baseball field.

This prompted Chairman David Tashner Sr. to ask, “How many bases will that buy?”

The department representative replied, “One set, three bases.”

The board voted 3-0 to support the purchase.

The fire department reported having 30 calls in July. The police report indicated there were two DUI arrests in July.

Solicitor David Backenstoe reported the state amended the Open Space and Land Acquisition and Preservation Act to allow for increased funding to preserve farmland. The amendments allow for monies to be used for transaction fees, maintenance funds and costs to improve newly acquired properties. The change also allows the township to partner with other groups to enhance open space preservation. This broadening of funded activities will grant the township an easier path to preserve farmland.

Prior to the meeting, Vice Chairman Daniel Piorkowski mentioned his proposal to enlarge the board to five supervisors from the current three is on the table. Piorkowski is advocating enlarging the board because he thinks more members can provide better service to the residents.
