Coplay to take action against property owner

At Coplay Borough Council’s regular meeting Aug. 9, Solicitor Lisa Pereira asked for an executive session to discuss litigation. The borough decided to take action against the property owner of 130 S. Ninth St. The property was cited for sanitary violations, and the owner appeared before council on several occasions asking for time to get the house in order.

Council presented several options to the homeowner. After the last failure to take positive action, council agreed to move forward with legal action.

Pereira indicated a hearing is scheduled before a judge to outline the particulars of the case.

“This is the first time the judge has a chance to review the details of the case. We should get a time line of action after the hearing,” she said.

Councilman Stephen Burker reported on the status of Community Days.

“We are on schedule and moving to make this another successful Community Days event,” he said. “The celebration is scheduled for Aug. 26 to Aug. 28. The hours are noon to 10 p.m.

“One of the things we want to have wrapped up by Community Days is the first phase of the Community Plaza,” he said after the meeting.

The first phase includes all the electrical support utilities, a concrete walkway and more landscaping.

“We know where everything is going to go,” he said. “We have people donating benches. The clock tower is being funded. We wanted to do this project as a community effort and not use any borough funds.”

Council approved the resignation of Seth Hoderewski from the Coplay Park and Recreation Board and appointed Rochelle Kane to fill the vacant slot. Kane is new to the borough and interested in participating in the community.

Councilman Charles Sodl expressed his concern over the upcoming budget process.

“This is an important budget …We need to look at how our resources are used and how effective they are. We can’t have another budget where we just add a percentage on top of the expenses from this year,” he said.

Council starts the budget process in September, with approvals in December.
