Karl K. Kercher
Karl Kercher, 84, died Aug. 3, 2016. He was the husband of Cathrine (Rex) Kercher for 65 years. Born in Maxatawny Township, he was the son of the late Claude and Katie (Eidle) Kercher.
He graduated from Allentown High School, Class of 1949 and Kutztown University, Class of 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant with the 2nd Infantry Division.
After the war, he taught general science and biology at Raub Junior High School for 22 years. While there he received a National Science Foundation grant to complete studies for a graduate degree and attended The Ohio State University for several summers while off from teaching and received a Master’s of Science degree in 1965. During his teaching career he also served four years on Allentown City Council. After that service, he became executive assistant to Mayor Joseph S. Dadonna for an additional 12 years. He also served and volunteered for the Allentown Literacy Council and was a longtime member of the board of the Lehigh County Humane Society.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Macungie and formerly a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Allentown, where he was active in teaching, a director of Christian education, and in youth work.
He was an avid Ohio State fan. He passed on his love for science, God, fishing, toad hunting, and his love of animals to all of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; children, Keith and his wife Amy, of Norristown; Kevin and his wife Stacy, of Whitehall, Kristin and her husband Kirk Koehler, of Whitehall and Kolette Scanlan, of Macungie; grandchildren, Kyle, Matthew, Katie, Nick and his wife Ashley, KerryLyn, Kurt, Kelly and Korin; great-grandchild, Sydney; brother, Charles. He was predeceased by brothers, Claude, Luther and Clyde.
