An official Allen Township delegation will be present 10 a.m. Aug. 5 at the groundbreaking ceremony for FedEx Ground’s $175 million mega-hub distribution plant off Willowbrook Road.
Bruce Frack, chairman of the township board of supervisors, at the July 26 meeting reported FedEx notified the township of the groundbreaking event, which comes about a month after contractors first began work at the 260-acre site.
Construction will take approximately two years.
Frack, township Manager Ilene Eckhart and supervisors are expected to attend the ceremony. Planning commission members and former Supervisors Chairman Paul Balliet also will be invited.
Frack said the township will continue to inform residents of the massive construction project as work progresses.
Earth-moving equipment is on site now. The initial work phase, which began July 11, involves measures to monitor sound and control airborne dust. The township was informed noise-monitoring devices will be placed along the north boundaries of the site, lessening the sound generated by large portable generators.
The placement of the noise-monitoring devices is a compliance requirement with township legislation.
The generators will provide power to on-site trailers until electrical infrastructure is in place.
Bethlehem Water Authority is participating in the first stage, providing a connection close to the northwest quadrant of the site to mitigate the amount of dust that may be airborne as construction proceeds.
Lights are in place since work is planned from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Widening of Race Street, Willowbrook Road and Airport Road also is on the agenda.
When finished, the plant could bring as many as 800 jobs to the township.
