Donors needed for remaining pylons at veterans memorial
With a gazebo and flagpole, including a yardarm on which banners of the various branches of the Armed Forces are flown, the Whitehall Township Veterans Memorial Committee is continuing an aggressive fundraising campaign to ensure the veterans memorial at the township campus is set for a 2017 Memorial Day ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Dennis Makovsky, former commander of Egypt Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7293, was instrumental in getting the project off the ground months ago and has placed an importance on finding a donor or two to fund the remaining brushed aluminum lighted pylons that have the insignia of the branch of military service at its angled top.
The five service pylons will be placed on the west end of the veterans memorial grounds.
“We have donors committed to the Army, Marine Corps and Navy pylons. We need someone to step up and sponsor the remaining Air Force and Coast Guard pylon. It could be a veteran, citizen or anyone who wants to sponsor the two remaining pylons. The cost is $1,250 each,” Makovsky said.
Donations continue to be received for engraved bricks that will be laid at the 40-feet-by-40-feet veterans memorial in front of the township municipal building. More than 200 donors already have come forward to purchase bricks, which cost $60 each.
“There is no specific amount of donor bricks set; however, many more such donors are needed,” Makovsky said.
With more than $15,000 raised, Makovsky said the entire project will run approximately $50,000.
A granite memorial will be the centerpiece of the veterans memorial.
The committee, comprised of representatives of the Fullerton and Hokendauqua American Legion posts, Egypt VFW Post 7293, American Gold Star Mothers Inc., township-elected officials, veterans and citizens, said the veterans memorial is not to deflect from the veterans memorials in place at American Legion and VFW sites.
