Catasauqua library: Cheers for summer readers

The Public Library of Catasauqua’s summer reading program is quickly coming to a close but not before we present two more programs aimed at enriching each child’s summer reading experience.

We will welcome four beautiful collie dogs and their owners from Lehigh Valley Therapy Dogs 1-2 p.m. Aug. 9. Lehigh Valley Therapy Dogs is a group of volunteers whose primary objective is to provide comfort and companionship by sharing their personal dogs with the disabled, the handicapped, the ill and the general public. Each volunteer has trained a dog and then had it evaluated and registered as a therapy dog. These dogs increase emotional well-being, promote healing and improve quality of life. Catasauqua’s summer readers will have an opportunity to get to know each dog while listening to stories about therapy dogs and their work and will hear a story about the most famous collie of all time, Lassie.

Certificates of congratulations for our summer readers will be awarded Aug. 16 at a family picnic at the George Taylor House on Lehigh Street. Come at noon with your lunch and share with each other your thoughts about the books you read and the programs you experienced. The library staff - Kath, Kathy and Sandra - will want to share with you as well. Oogie’s Ice Cream Truck will stop by, and each child will be treated to dessert. After lunch, the Catasauqua Fire Department will be on hand to educate us about its work.

Mark your calendars: 2 p.m. Aug. 18, Catasauqua Police Officer John Wiseman will be at the library to draw the winner of the basket of craft goodies. The proceeds of this raffle go toward the training of a new K-9 officer. We all wish Officer Jack a happy, healthy retirement.
