Work begins on Hokendauqua row homes after June 30 fire
The early-evening fire June 30 in the 3300 block of South Second Street, Hokendauqua, which raged across six roofs and the second levels of attached row homes, are presently being reconstructed, all except for one residence.
Insurance adjusters were at the scene July 1, the day after the fire. Agreements with the homeowners were reached quickly, and Cityline Construction Company, Allentown, contractors soon began work. The company prides itself on fire and water restoration.
Construction workers have been busy with the joists and sheets of wood in replacing the roofs, along with framework for the sides of the residences.
Residents of the house where the fire is believed to have started, possibly a second-floor bedroom, have not signed on with Cityline and may get a separate contractor.
A company contractor at the site Friday said all the families displaced could be back in their restored homes possibly within two months.
Whitehall Township Acting Fire Chief Joe Shambo told The Press Friday the cause of the fire still has not been determined.
“The (state police) fire marshal has asked for further information,” Shambo said.
Shambo and the fire marshal were in the homes doing an inspection as soon as the fire was out.
There were no injuries to families or firefighters during the blaze, which took more than two hours to put out. The township fire department’s companies and its volunteers, along with outside companies, were praised for their rapid and professional work in the situation.
Roof shingles, window frames and windows are next on the agenda for construction workers.
