Girls look to keep trending upward
After a productive summer season, Northampton’s girls’ basketball team is optimistic they can continue an upward spiral toward the winter season.
“We had a lot of kids who don’t normally get a lot of time see plenty of playing time,” said head coach Jeff Jacksits. “We had some girls who were involved with their AAU teams, but overall we had a good summer.
“It was a good experience for us.”
Jacksits noted the team spent its annual weekend at Chapel Hill, N.C., where they participated in the University of North Carolina’s camp. They played eight games over the three days, facing two state champions in the process.
“We faced some pretty good competition and it was a good test for us,” added Jacksits. “We always have a good trip. It is not always about winning, but it is about how we play as a team.”
The Konkrete Kids recently completed their summer season in the Catty League. Their season ended with a loss to Dieruff in the playoffs.
“We did a nice job in the league,” said Jacksits. “At one point, we were 9-2. We didn’t play the team we normally do during the regular season.”
The Kids will return a core for the upcoming season, led by incoming senior Aja Blount, who surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark this season.
“Aja (Blount) did a great job for us during the season and the summer,” stated Jacksits. “She scores, but rebounding is one of her best attributes. She has become better and better each year.
“She also has become a leader on this team. We have a number of young girls coming up and Blount can take charge this season.”
Incoming sophomore Victoria Keenan opened plenty of eyes last season as she was recognized as one of the leading point guards in the area. Jacksits expects her development to continue to evolve.
“She (Keenan) handles the ball better than most of the boys in the area,” said Jacksits. “She really has worked on her defense this summer. But there are a number of colleges that already have inquired about her. She is very talented.
“We know she can only get better.”
Along with Blount and Keenan, Jade Rindock is back from an injury and Jen Rogers will also be in the mix as the Kids will look to build on their 18-10 overall mark last season.
The K-Kids will conclude their summer at SportsFest this weekend.
“The summer is the summer and it is was it is,” said Jacksits. “We got playing time for everybody and we made some strides.”
