Puppets ‘Growl!’ at Muhlenberg
Puppetry, musical numbers and physical comedy are sure to entertain in Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre’s reinvention of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” in “Growl!, created by Christopher Scheer and Ora Fruchter of Doppelskope theater company, through July 30, Studio Theatre, Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance, Muhlenberg College.
For the past two seasons, Doppelskope has created world-premiere musicals for young audiences at MSMT. In 2014, they presented “Gruff!,” a troll’s-eye view of the story of the three billy goats, and last season it was “Grimm!,” a tale of the storytelling Brothers Grimm.
“We have a very talented cast and they puppeteer all of the main characters as well as playing live music,” Scheer says of “Growl!”
“The show is an intricate, seamless dance of multiple musical instruments, tabletop puppetry, physical comedy and large-scale shadow puppetry,” says Scheer, who plays Baby Bear in “Growl!”
In “Growl!”’s take on the well-known tale, Baby Bear follows Goldilocks back to her house and wreaks havoc (as she did to Baby Bear’s house).
The eight-member cast of “Growl!” plays an ensemble of woodland animals, who in turn present the story of Goldilocks and the Bear family through puppetry. The cast members play instruments, ranging from washboard and stand-up bass to banjo and accordion.
Fruchter, who wrote the lyrics for the musical and designed the puppets, directs the show.
Toby Singer is the composer and music director of “Growl!”
“For ‘Growl!’, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what made us laugh as children, and what still makes our inner-children laugh now,” explains Scheer.
“We like to create comedy that works on at least two levels, so that we can engage adults just as much as we engage kids … We think the end result will be something very new and exciting to our audiences,” says Scheer.
Children in the audience can stay after the show for a 45-minute activity workshop. They can join the cast to explore themes of the show through movement, storytelling and creative play.
On July 23, “Growl!” will be interpreted in Sign Language at the 10 a.m. performance and adapted in a sensory-friendly performance for children with autism at the 1 p.m. performance
Cast members are available after performances to meet the audience and sign autographs.
