Township park and recreation board now inactive

The future of Whitehall Township’s Park & Recreation Board is uncertain at this time. In the wake of a report Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. provided to the township board of commissioners, for now, it will be on an inactive status.

“The park and recreation board meetings are dormant until further notice,” Hozza said in his report June 13.

There was discussion by the commissioners for months regarding the status of the park and recreation board since it could not hold meetings and conduct business because of a lack of a quorum. The board’s membership consists of representatives from the township playground associations.

The lack of attendance was attributed to the associations’ busy schedules in operating their own activities - baseball, softball, basketball and other sports.

Hozza noted there is, however, a positive report when it comes to recreation in the township.

“The recreation commission met on May 25 and had positive discussions about improving the Whitehall recreation structure,” Hozza said.

Since the talks are in the formative stages, no other details were released by the mayor.

The recreation commission is a separate entity from the park and recreation board. Among its responsibilities is acting on grant submissions from the playground and park groups.

The township in the past has taken over operations of the buildings at West Catasauqua and Cementon parks, including scheduling events for rentals.
