Serman makes the most of his chances

Kyle Serman knew he would have his chance this past varsity baseball season, and he made the most of it.

The Northampton right-hander spent last season on the JV squad, and he hoped to be a part of the Konkrete Kids’ varsity staff this spring.

The transition was a smooth one.

At one point in the season, Serman had a 3-1 overall record after six starts.

In one of his better outings of the year against Bethlehem Catholic, Serman picked up his third win of the season in a hard-fought, 2-1 victory. Over seven innings, Serman issued seven hits and struck out nine and walked one.

“I [felt] good about the season and it has been a lot of fun,” said the junior. “I knew I had to make the most of my chance. I have been waiting to get to this point. I know that I have to change my pitches often because of the overall speed and the batters involved.

“That has been one of the differences from JV. But I have been pretty confident through the whole process.”

Head coach Mick Sugra has welcomed the transition.

“He (Serman) has been one of our top pitchers and has really established himself,” said Sugra. “He’s a strike thrower who works hard and keeps the ball down. He works quickly and induces a lot of ground balls.

Against Becahi, Serman topped the 90 mph barrier, as he normally throws between 60-80 mph. He throws a fastball, change-up, and curveball, the latter being the pitch that he has worked on more recently.

“I have been working on my curveball,” noted Serman. “I have been a fastball pitcher most of my life and you can get away with that at JV. But you have to be able to mix your pitches well at varsity.”

Serman began playing baseball at the age of four in T-ball. One of the more memorable games in his career was a one-hitter against Lehigh-Bethlehem he threw on the Connie Mack level.

He credits his success to the constant support of his parents, Della and Christopher. An older brother, Christopher Jr., also played for the Kids.

Serman is currently part of the Northampton Legion team, looking to help essentially the same group of players make the postseason in the Northampton County League.
