Northampton gains momentum towards playoffs
It was a busy week for Northampton’s legion team, but the squad came out of a six game stretch in seven days with a 4-2 record to keep them near the top of the standings.
Northampton (10-5) is now looking to close out the regular season this week on a high note to put them in solid position for next week’s NORCO playoffs.
The Kids are one game behind Nazareth (11-4) of the East division lead with three games to play this week against Palmer (4-8), Easton (3-10) and Wilson (5-8).
“Our goal for the final week is to make sure we are peaking heading into the playoffs,” said head coach Mike Bodnar. “I want to try and catch Nazareth but that relies on them losing a game. I want to make sure we are doing the things we need to do to win ball games. That’s the only thing that we can control.”
Northampton split a doubleheader with Nazareth last Sunday, losing a 4-3 score in a 10 inning opening affair, before running away with a 19-7 win in a five inning nightcap.
“It was a pitchers dual throughout with some great defense by both teams,” Bodnar said. “We just couldn’t hang on after giving up two leadoff walks, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single in the tenth.
“The second game was just one of those days when Nazareth had no pitchers left and we had two tired pitchers for us. We jumped on them early and finished in five innings.”
Mike Bodnar pitched 9 innings last week and gave up zero runs over the course of the week, while batting 7-for-16 and six RBI.
Ian Csencsits (six RBI), Will Stackhouse (four RBI) and Ian Luberti (four RBI) each drove in runs last week, while Shane Aster was tremendous on the defensive side.
Jared Angerman and Kyle Serman had five runs each.
Bodnar would like to see his team continue to roll this week and possibly steal the division title, but more importantly, just wants to see his team continuing their momentum heading into the postseason.
“If we are clicking in the three phases of the game, we can win these last three games and have a real positive attitude going into the playoffs,” he said. “And the playoffs are a whole different beast.”
