East Allen gets ready for summer camp
Chuck Frantz opened the East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting June 8 by introducing the township’s camp counselors for the 2016 session.
Lizzie Mentzell will return as head counselor. It will be her eighth year.
“This will be Lizzie’s last year in the program. She is getting married and will move out of the area,” Frantz said in wishing her well.
Camp starts June 20.
“We have added a couple of new events. The Bethlehem Mounted Police will be here, and we are trying to arrange the MedEvac chopper for a visit,” he said.
This year, campers and their parents will be asked to support a new venture by Lehigh Valley Zoo.
“They (the zoo) are creating a safari experience,” Frantz said. “This year they are bringing in giraffes. There is a giraffe house contemplated so the animals can keep warm in the winter. Next year, the plan is to bring in lions.”
Frantz did not specify how the campers will participate to help the project.
NA Studios presented glimpses of the township’s new website. It will use some of the latest technology to ensure it displays properly on any device.
Township Manager Deborah Seiple discussed how the additional 24 acres of Bicentennial Park will be developed. According to Seiple, the additional acreage will be used for passive recreation. There will not be ballfields or a park building. A paved walkway is in place with offshoots to other park features.
“Some of these paths we wanted to get paved for years,” she said.
Projects will continue to keep this section of the park in its natural habitat.
St Luke’s Hospital asked for an extension of its final occupancy check. The outpatient clinic is located on Route 512. The hospital requested an extension in January citing weather problems. The latest delay is expected to last only until mid-July. Extensions are granted for six months. Seiple indicated the board would like to get this project closed out and most likely will not grant any further extensions.
Seiple indicated that FRCA is getting strict on examining vehicles bringing yard waste to the site. East Allen Township is the only entity billing separately to use the trash site.
“Everyone else is paying, but there is not a separate bill. We have a handle on how many residents use the site,” she said.
East Allen has an application for the FRCA permit.
“We explain the responsibilities well, so there should be no confusion over what can be dumped at the site,” she said.
