The Borough of Northampton will await the findings of a study that impacts the borough fiscally when it seeks bonds for projects in the future - whether it be street improvements, large equipment purchases or major capital needs.
Council at its June 2 meeting said at stake is the borough’s A- bond rating, considered a very good rating that saves the borough large amounts of money on its bond repayment.
A representative of Moody’s, the firm setting the borough’s bond rating, interviewed borough Treasurer Mary Ellen Handlon May 23 to determine the borough’s fiscal stability.
After Moody’s completes its study, the company will re-evaluate the borough’s bond rating.
The borough has been conservative in running the community. Its real estate tax levy for property owners ranks among the lowest for boroughs in Northampton County, while providing a myriad of services.
Borough officials are hopeful it can retain its A- bond rating; it enjoys a great history on past bond issues and streets and capital works projects.
In other news, the recreation center is holding a golf tournament June 26 at Whitetail Golf Course.
Also, the center is sponsoring a bus trip to New York City Nov. 28 to see Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The trip is a fundraiser for the recreation center.
A fire-ravaged building at 1401 Main St. will be removed. Council Vice President Keith Piescienski said demolition permits have been issued by the borough. There was no mention of whether a new residential structure will be built at the site.
Councilwoman Judy Kutzler, fire and health chairwoman, said the borough’s Fireman’s Relief Association purchased 32 state-of-the-art air packs for the fire department at a cost exceeding $200,000. No local taxes were involved in the purchase.
