Coplay discusses honoring contributions by residents
At Coplay’s workshop session June 7, Councilman Steve Burker asked council to consider recognizing residents past and present for contributions made to the borough.
“I’m not really thinking of this as a Hall of Fame, but more something that honors residents who made a contribution. More like a Pride of Coplay,” he said.
Council agreed with the suggestion.
Councilman Charles Sodl pointed out that a recognition ceremony would work nicely with the borough’s upcoming 150th anniversary celebration.
“We could even create a place in the community plaza where the names could be displayed,” he said.
Council will review the criteria that allows residents to be nominated for the honor.
Burker also proposed that military veterans living in Coplay be given free pool passes.
“It’s a minor thing, but it shows that we are grateful for the service they performed,” he said.
Council agreed with the idea and will make a formal proposal at the next meeting. Veterans need to present a military ID or a VA card to get a free pass.
Council members were disappointed that they received no bids for the residential property the borough owns next to the municipal building. “The minimum bid price ($128,000) may have scared them away,” said Councilman Mark Molitoris.
Council debated alternatives on how to get the property sold. Council will review its options and further address the situation at council’s regular meeting, scheduled for June 14.
Earlier in the year, council received bids for paving work on North Front Street. The bids were higher than anticipated, and the borough sent out a new request. The revised bids were opened at the workshop and are in the same range as the previous bids. The township engineer will review the proposals and report back to council at the regular meeting.
Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society fundraising event, is expanding its community involvement. On the third Tuesday of every month, volunteers will have a community meal 4-6 p.m. at various locations. The committee asked if the borough would display signs around town about the free meal. The library and the fire social hall were suggested locations.
The library board asked council for eight free passes to the pool to use as awards for its active summer reading program. The request will be on the agenda for the regular meeting.
Addy Todal, who recently moved into the borough, sent in a request to fill a vacancy on the park and recreation board. Todal has experience in working with parks and recreational activities. Her application is expected to be approved at the next regular meeting.
