As Northampton Farmers Market gets set to open for its third year May 24 at the recently completed Uptown Park, Main Street, optimism is high from vendors that the public will continue to support the venture, particularly its large array of homegrown produce from local farms.
Northampton Borough Planner Victor Rodite said the farmers market will be open 3-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays until early autumn.
The farmers market is anchored by two farming operations, one in Allen Township and the other in Moore Township.
In a separate development at Uptown Park, just steps away from Roxy Theater, council agreed to put on the finishing touches at the mini-park, which decades ago housed Kroope’s Cotton Shoppe.
With funding from a casino grant, figured at approximately $16,000, council consented to Rodite’s recommendation to erect a replica old-time clock that had been placed in village squares, mostly in New England. The clock is not expected to be as large as the clock by the municipal building on Laubach Avenue, which was dedicated to the late Councilman Peter Rusyn.
Regarding the proposed enhancements for Uptown Park, Councilman Ed Pany said Rodite and Councilman Anthony Pristash, also president of Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of Uptown Park Committee, often confer on the proposed additions to the park.
There also could be further landscaping and fencing there.
Council thus far has not made any plans for a ribbon cutting or dedication of the park, which has a gazebo, small fountain and other enhancements.
