Allen to seek help with bike lanes

Allen Township Board of Supervisors agreed at the May 12 meeting to dispatch township Manager Ilene Eckhart and Attorney B. Lincoln Treadwell to meet with Robert J. Spengler, superintendent of Catasauqua Area School District, on issues of spectators parking their vehicles in zones set aside as bicycle lanes while they attend athletic games on school grounds.

With the township having no full-time or part-time police force, relying on state police for more serious issues, the township is reaching out to the school district to determine what remedy is available to move the parked vehicles from the bicycle lanes at West Bullshead and Willowbrook roads, both near the high school campus and athletic fields.

The school fields near the two roads in question are mainly used for soccer, particularly youth groups.

Officials said there are public parking lots near the high school.

The bicycle lanes are marked with white lines and graphics, and signs noting no parking are in place; yet, the supervisors said the warnings are ignored.

The township also has posted large signs with a bike logo along the sides of the roads to further indicate the area is designated for biking.

“Can Catasauqua police help out at Catasauqua High School?” Supervisors Chairman Bruce Frack asked.

Treadwell, the township solicitor, said that could be a possibility, noting cooperation between the two municipalities in approving an intermunicipal sewer agreement with the Borough of Catasauqua.

Catasauqua High School is in a rather unusual geographic location, situated in Allen Township, part of Northampton Area School District.

Frack said, “Ask them anyway; it can’t hurt.”

The parked cars in the bicycle lanes, Eckhart said, force the bicyclists toward the center of the roads, prompting Supervisor Dale Hassler to say, “The signs are there, and the people are ignoring them.”
