Sigal Museum to be ‘quilted’ for a week

“The Quilted Museum” has been announced as the newest “Community Art Project” by the Mercantile Home, Easton, in collaboration with the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society.

The project calls on the community to create a huge fabric quilt that will cover the front of the Sigal Museum, 342 Northampton St., Easton. Community members will cut fabric, create “quilt” squares, and affix them to the interior of the museum’s all-glass facade, transforming the building into a three-story quilt in just one week.

All ages are encouraged to participate by signing up at the Mercantile Home, 140 Northampton St, Easton; or online, mercantilehome.com, or calling 610-258-4046.

The project will be completed May 16 - 21. A celebration will be held at 2 p.m. May 22 at the museum.

“This project is a fun way to come together as a community and playfully highlight a wonderful jewel of an institution in Easton,” said Mercantile Home co-owner Ron Morris.

Mercantile Home co-owner Ken Jones added, “Folks of all ages are encouraged to sign up. Groups of friends, organizations, schools -- you name it. There will be plenty of work and fun to be completed in just one week.”

The Sigal Museum, home of the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Museum, is a leading institution of local history, and home to significant collections of pre-European settlement artifacts, decorative arts and textiles, farming implements and colonial furniture.

Said Sigal Museum Executive Director Andrew Zellers-Frederick, “As an organization so closely linked to our community, we are very excited to be working with Mercantile Home on this project. It coincides perfectly with our current collection, ‘Courthouse Quilters and Patchwork Tradition.’“

Past Mercantile Community Art Projects have included “Snowflakes for Easton,” “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” and the “Can Be” flash mob among others.

The Mercantile Home hours are 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday - Saturday, and 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
