Bel Canto Children’s Chorus to premiere ‘Anne Frank’ piece

The Bel Canto Children’s Chorus of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem presents the regional premiere of Linda Tutas Haugan’s “Anne Frank: A Living Voice” in its “Spring Concert: Concert for Peace,” 3 p.m. May 7, Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, 321 E. Third St. (Polk and Third streets), Bethlehem.

Joy Hirokawa, conductor, artistic director, and founder, said, “Our singers have grown so much from learning this music, particularly ‘Anne Frank: A Living Voice.’

“The words of Anne Frank are at once heartbreaking and moving. Through it all, she shows an amazing sense of gratitude and hope, truly an inspiration,” said Hirokawa.

The piece is also being performed on “Holocaust Remembrance Day” at Tiferet Bet Israel Synagogue, Blue Bell, Montgomery County, in a sold-out concert.

Tutas Haugan is expected to attend the performance.

Jennie Gilrain, a fourth grade teacher at Freemansburg Elementary School, Bethlehem Area School District, and a former actor, director and teacher at Touchstone Theatre, Bethlehem, is choreographer for the piece.

Other works on the program include the Hebrew song “Ani Ma’amin,” Joan Szymko’s “Malala, River,” “It Takes a Village” and the camp-meeting song, “No Time,” arranged by Susan Brumfield.
