Tributes - online messages, postings on outdoor businesses and more - continue to come from the public and officials in honor of the late Robert (Bob) Benner, Whitehall Township’s longtime fire chief, who died March 30 at the age of 80.
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. at the April 11 Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners meeting added a banner has been ordered in remembrance of Benner’s decades of service to the community. Benner was the township’s first and only full-time fire chief.
The banner will be placed in a prominent area of the township’s campus, off MacArthur Road.
“We will name a street for Chief Benner,” Hozza also reported.
The street chosen will be designated at a later time.
Benner rose above politics in the township, Hozza said. His insight was always sought, such as in cases when deciding which fire company would be next to receive a new fire truck.
Looking back, the township and its fire companies said they were grateful they named the fire training station off Water Street in honor of Benner last May.
Benner was the founder of the fire training facility, which is utilized by many fire companies, whose members have agreed the training received is unmeasurable.
Flags at the township municipal building and fire stations were directed to be lowered to half-staff for 30 days in memory of Benner. Flags will continue that way until the end of the month.
